Corporate and Social Responsibility

As a decentralized organization, we encourage the sponsorship of community-based initiatives and endeavor to have the greatest social impact in local markets where our operations, employees, customers and other stakeholders are located.  We donate and sponsor local initiatives in health, community programs, local sports, arts and education.

Our corporate initiatives are driven by our belief that our people are our greatest asset.  Employees are encouraged to continue their career development by enrolling in higher education courses and seminars.  Our Educational Assistance Program provides reimbursement of tuition and textbooks for successful completion.

In addition to educational advancement, we reward our employees for their continued service.

Our Career Achievement Awards are celebrated at 5 year intervals starting from the 10th anniversary and provide our employees with a memento for their contribution to the company.

Over 700 Scholarships.  Over $2.2 Million Given.

Our Scholarship Program is designed to provide the children of our employees with the opportunity for the pursuit of higher education.  This program, which began in 1989, has provided more than 700 scholarships for a total value of more than $2.2 million.  The scholarships are awarded in furtherance of post-secondary education at a recognized university or college.

In 2019, in addition to recognized university or college programs the scholarships were expanded to include those who choose to enter recognized trade programs.  Our membership in the Metals Service Center Institute also led to scholarship awards of US$161,000 to deserving children of our employees.

We endeavor to minimize the environmental impact of our operations.  In 2014 after 20 years in our previous Head and Ontario regional office, we had outgrown our facility.  The decision was made to enter into a build to suit arrangement.  The building was completed in 2014 and attained a LEED®-NC Silver certification which is an internationally recognized green building certification.  The environmentally friendly aspects of the building include rainwater harvesting for irrigation, advanced lighting controls, low-flow water fixtures, a white roof to reduce urban heat, and multiple recycling bins to increase waste diversion.
